Offering their free time on a Sunday afternoon, a vast majority of the student community served as tour guides, stood at informational tables for clubs and sports, and offered a ministry of presence at our recent Open House! Faculty Friday Spotlight: Ms. Bacon

“Being on the soccer team has taught me far more than just how to pass and trap a ball. It has taught me what it’s like to be part of something—a sort of family. Ending the season with my sisters will be heartbreaking, but I know that they will remain close to me. Yes, this is one of those ‘lasts’ that we experience, but I know I will find myself experiencing a lot of new ‘firsts’ soon… just like that first day of preseason.”

— Jada Ross ’17

 Quote of the Week
Our Quote of the Week comes from Jada Ross ’17 reflecting on the “first of the lasts” as she pondered her final soccer season with the Phoenix. Ross, a veteran player with the Girls’ Soccer team, offered this wisdom in her recent chapel speech. You may find highlights of other recent chapel speeches linked below.

A Word from Mr. Nunan

Are You Ready?

This past Sunday at our Open House, as part of my welcome to prospective students and families, I noted that it was the birthday of the king of the late-night talk show, Johnny Carson.  Mr. Carson would have turned 91 on Sunday.

Famous for his one-liners, Carson said:

  • Happiness is your dentist telling you it won't hurt… and then having him catch his own hand in the drill.
  • Thanksgiving is an emotional holiday.  People travel thousands of miles to be with people they only see once a year…and only to discover that once a year is way too often.

What struck me about Johnny Carson, however, was something I read when a reporter asked him about all of remarkable success he earned. This was Mr. Carson’s response:

Talent alone won't make you a success. Neither will being in the right place at the right time.  Unless you are ready. The most important question is: “Are you ready?”

What an extraordinary insight.

Our scholars have the talent. We know this. Our young women and men are talented in the classroom and in the community, on the field and on the stage; they have what it takes to be successful. Indeed, our scholars are not only developing the talents they already have, they are continually discovering new ones!

Our scholars are in the right place at the right time. I believe (yes, I know I am a bit biased in this regard) that Saint Joseph Prep is the right place. We are a place of scholarship and service, of character and community; we are a place where students come to together to learn, to lead, and eventually, to light the world. And we come at the right time. We all know that the teenage years are critical in a young person’s growth and formation, and that the ripple effect of one’s high school experience is felt well beyond graduation—indeed, it influences the rest of one’s life. Saint Joseph Prep is the right place at the right time.

Now comes the question. Are you ready? This, notes Mr. Carson, is the real question. Are you ready? As we come to the end of the first academic quarter (next Friday, November 4), as many of our teams prepare for the state tournament (volleyball, girls’ soccer, and boys’ soccer), as the fall play engages in the final weeks of rehearsals (the show is November 18 and 19), and as seniors apply to college (the early deadlines are November 1 and 15), let’s make every effort to be ready. Let’s do all that we can, as parents and guardians, as teachers and advisors, as coaches and moderators, as role models and cheerleaders, so that our young women and men will answer, “Are you ready?” with a resounding, “Yes!”
